CL Hawks Just Miss in Loss to Freddie, 4-3
CL Hawks continue their climb into the light of day as their loss showed that better things might be on the horizon after a tough loss to Fredericksburg, 4-3.
“Our effort was outstanding and I think they are finally getting it,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant started. “The young guys are feeling comfortable and are laying a good foundation…..we’re still young and we just needed a couple of breaks.”
The Billies started first with 3 singles in the first with an error thrown in for seasoning and Canyon Lake started in a hole, 2-0.
CL’s first inning showed promise with a lead-off double by Cade Dunavant and Lee Stafford was hit by a pitch that had their first two batters own for some Hawk payback.
A fielder’s choice and then a caught stealing on Hayden Reed trying to advance to 3rd base helped keep CL still needing some runs. The double steal was successful for only one of the runners and a CJ Parrish pop out ended this frame.
Avery Montgomery was on the mound after a great outing last week in Hondo. His night got back on track after allowing two more singles the next inning.
Damage was not realized by the Billies as the next two Billies had fly=outs to Parker Reno in left field.
“I trust the team and I just forget the errors and focus on the batter,” Montgomery threw a curve. “We’re getting better and our pitching has been good and we are starting to hit the ball more….they (opponents) think they can beat us but we can come back and win.”
The Hawks have shown a lot of maturity as this season starts to unveil the time of year when wins are magnified.
Canyon Lake did get their first run in the 2nd when JT Greene had a one out double to left field and then advanced to 3rd base on a fielder’s choice.
With 2 outs, a Fredericksburg wild pitch scored Greene cutting the Billies lead to a one run affair, 1-2.
Freddie applied pressure in their next inning but Stafford would pick off his first of two Billes for the evening. Two singles and a double with a Hawk error gave the visitors a, 4-1 lead going into the bottom on the 3rd.
That would be the last threat resulting in runs for Fredericksburg as Canyon Lake who had been left in the cold after a loss to Hondo two games ago now proceed to give the Biilies a scare.
Walks resulted in Hawk runs as they started the 5th inning with Dylan Compton and Cale Claycomb getting free passes.
Then a clutch 2-out double rocket off the bat of Gavin Districh scored both Hawks and brought the home team to within one run, 4-3.
Stafford help keep the game within reach after throwing out his second Billie trying to steal 3rd….this was his second game in a row where an opponent was gunned down 90 feet from home plate.
Canyon Lake has had a tough year record wise but this scrappy team has had some bite the past two weeks and with this loss still shows some momentum as they travel to Fredericksburg on Tuesday.
With the 3 game per team format, CL has a lot of games to get this season on track as they will end the first round of two games against Bandera after the Hawks Tuesday Freddie contest.
Errors were the culprit on this night as Canyon Lake surprised Fredericksburg and gave the Billies everything they had.
“This group of kids are fun to watch play and coach right now,” Dunavant closed. “We are still in the thick of things.”
