CLJV Have Just Enough for Win over Wimberley, 39-32

The first part of the game with Canyon Lake’s JV team and Wimberley was noticed during the outset after the tip.

               Go JV Hawks!!

The Hawks played the first minute, on the offensive side of the court, after 6 shots and 5 offensive rebounds. There were no points on that possession but it was noted that CL would win the battle of the boards along with the battle of these JV Devil’s Back-Bone teams, 39-32.

“This is a very coachable group and they play together and it is special to watch them,” Head JV Coach Juan Lopez said. “Every game they have maximum effort and they compete….they are great kids.”

Wimberley took the first lead on a 3 point shot and held that advantage for the next 3 minutes until a mid-range jumper from Nic Rivera for a Hawk, 4-3 lead. The Texans would respond a minute later with a two pointer.

A Luke Mendez 3 pointer with less than a minute in the first period gave the Hawks the advantage for the rest of this contest.

After being successful on just 2 of 15 shots and having the lead would be a pleasant surprise, given the Hawk’s great defense being played during the first quarter, 7-5.

Anthony Zavala finished with 13 Rebounds in Win over Wimberley

During the 2nd period, Anthony Zavala would make his presence known as he finished with 8 rebounds just in that period along with scoring 4 points leaving Wimberley trying to find ways to take the batteries away from this EverReady Rabbit. J. T. Greene matched Zavala’s 4 points in this quarter which helped CL, in keeping their distance, from the Texans.

“We needed to go a head and step it up,” Zavala recounted. “Overall we played good and overpowered them with our rebounds.”

Zavala was 1/3 of those bounds after securing 13 for the game.

“We had to play as a team and that helped us get the best of them and whup ‘em,” Zavala closed.

            Way to Go Hawks!!

That first half had Canyon Lake making 7 of 8 free throws which paid dividends in having a, 20-15 lead going into halftime.

Rylee Spauding would help with his domination in the 2nd half after scoring 8 of his game high 12 points after sinking 3 of his 5 shots.

Canyon Lake’s largest lead of 11 points happened with 2:20 left in the game. Spaulding made his 12th point on a nifty assist from Jeremy Duncan, 37-26.

Wimberley was not through, as the Texan’s, made one last run after scoring 6 straight points giving Coach Lopez a reason for re-entering the starting 5 for insurance. Duncan and Damien Nichols both made a free throw a piece helping CL to seal this win.

Congrats and Go Hawks!!
