Head Coach Matt Monzingo Takes Comal ISD Athletic Director Job

From the Comal Independent School District web site.

Head Coach Matt Monzingo

“Matt Monzingo has been named the new Comal ISD Athletic Director effective at the end of May. Monzingo takes over for Jim Rodrigue, who passed away after a short illness in April. Monzingo has been the head football coach and athletic coordinator at Canyon Lake High School since it opened in 2007 and previously held the same position at Pflugerville Connally High School from 1996-2007.”

Canyon Lake Head Coach Matt Monzingo will be stepping down after 31 years of walking the sidelines.

“I told the football team yesterday,” Coach Monzingo said. “I have left three high school jobs and this one was a very….very tough thing to do.”

Coach Monzingo brought Canyon Lake up in a very….very quick manner. The Hawks won after just their second year and had a winning record and into the playoffs.

Canyon Lake Scores in both Girls and Boys State Track Meet

Canyon Lake has another first when both Jordan Anderson and Marisa Ellis

Jordan Anderson finishes Sixth in Statei

Jordan Anderson finishes Sixth in Statei

placed sixth in their respective events this past weekend in Austin for the 3A-State Track Meet.

Marisa Ellis’ event (Triple Jump) was scheduled for Friday night and Ellis responded with a sixth place finish. Her 36-00.50, jump was off her previous best mark in the Region Meet two weeks ago, but the Junior can now concentrate on next season knowing what is possible as a Senior.

In our article earlier last week, you would have read where Ellis is not going to scratch and she followed through with her performance and not having a scratch on any of her jumps.

Ellis first jump was 34-07.75 and that had her in sixth place after the first round, where she ended up after her sixth jump.

The jump that solidified her placing was on her fourth try when she cleared 35-04.75, which had her a full foot further than the other three participants vying for placing in this event.

Ellis had her personal best jump two weeks ago when she cleared 37-04.50 in Corpus Christi.

This was the second year in a row for Canyon Lake Girls to score points at the State Track Meet. Jessica Cunningham competed in the Pole Vault last year for the Hawks.

Jordan Anderson was also scoring for the Hawks as this Junior improved his 400 Meter Dash time by almost a full second from his previous record two weeks ago in Corpus.

Coaches Corner: Head Track Coach Levi Montgomery

The ReSporter: What does it mean for this program to finally have that first athlete

Canyon Lake Tracksters

(Jordan Anderson) break through the barrier and get to Austin?

Coach Levi Montgomery: “Jordan is a very talented young man. His work ethic matched his talent this season, and he deserves the success he has had. His going to the state meet is another first for Hawk Athletics, and we are proud of him.”

The ReSporter: Share some about the Seniors and what you would like the fans and other students to know about their years at CL.

CL Track: Marisa Ellis, She has a lot of Nerve

Marisa Ellis will be Canyon Lake’s second participant for Boys and Girl’s Track Team

Canyon Lake getting the Jump on the Competition

Marisa Ellis finishing Strong

this week as she attempts to Triple Jump her way for a medal in Austin.

Marisa, at our last writing was on a mission to have a personal best jump and clear the 37 foot mark. The distance had haunted this Junior for two years when she went to the Region Meet as a Freshman for Midlothian jumping just shy of that mark.

The distance was finally reached on her second to last jump in last weeks Region Meet in Corpus Christi when she hit 37’4.5”.

“I had jumped 36’8” and was in first for a while,” Ellis recounted. “Then two girls beat my jump on the second to last jump and I was in third.”

No pressure for Ellis as she still had two more jumps to get into second or first place and make the next round in Austin.

CL Track: Jordan Anderson, Making Your Goals come True

Jordan Anderson has scored 250 points for the Hawks this Track Season.

State Bound Jordan Anderson running 400 Meter at Corpus Christi

State Bound Jordan Anderson running 400 Meter at Corpus Christi

That number could of been higher if he competed in all the events he was qualified to run in Corpus Christi Regional Meet last week.

So seven meets and 250 points with one more chance to add to that total this next week in Austin. Pretty impressive for any athlete.

“I felt myself breaking down,” Anderson started. “So, I decided to put all my eggs in two baskets, the 400 and High Jump.”

Anderson had qualified for five events and before the Regional Meet he had whittled down his events to only two the 400 Meter Dash and High Jump.

The prelims in the Regional Meet would have the participants running just once and based on their time, they would know if they would get to run in the finals the next day.

In Anderson’s heat he found himself in sixth place and he had to wake up in time to be able to qualify for the finals.

Baseball: Hawks End Season with Loss to Boerne

The Hawks finished up they’re 2012 Baseball Season last Saturday in Boerne as the

Canyon Lake's J. J. Nance

Canyon Lake's J. J. Nance

team will work on one sure thing to get better…get older!!

This team played with a majority of players that have yet to get their driver’s license this year and many times the result was painful for the team as Canyon Lake took a lot of bumps and bruises throughout the campaign.

Finishing with Boerne did not do any favors for the Hawks as the two game final series was seeing where this team hopes to be in the future…but that will only come with time, practice, work outs, etc…

Track and Field: Hawks get Two to State!

Jordan Anderson Takes First in 400 Meter Run

Jordan Anderson Takes First in 400 Meter Run

Marisa Ellis and Jordan Anderson will both be busy the next two weeks. As the Sports scene for the 2011-12 season for Canyon Lake draws to a close these two athletes will be showcasing their talents in Austin.

Marisa Ellis had her personal best jump when she cleared the 37 foot barrier by four and a half inches and in so doing will be one of the favorites in the Triple Jump.

Ellis will be one of six other athletes that has jumped past the 37 foot barrier at the State Meet in two weeks.

Last week in our conversation with the Junior Jumper, her main goal was to get past a standard that had been hard to get over. Now that she has broken that distance more goals loom in competing against eight other triple jumpers from around the State.

Region Track Meet is All About the Second Day

Canyon Lake athletes are new with many of the, ‘We have never been this far

Freshman Mariah Ellis in 4x400 Relay

Freshman Mariah Ellis in 4x400 Relay

before,’ scenarios.

This week the Boy and Girl Hawk Track Teams will be competing against the best schools in Region IV, which is comprised of eight districts.

Two weeks ago each athlete that finished in the top three of any event punched their ticket to compete in the Region Meet that is being held at Corpus Christi this Friday and Saturday.

To advance to Austin for the State Meet these athletes will have to be in the top two in order to have a chance to run or throw or jump again.

The ReSporter has documented where Canyon Lake’s finishes have compared to their competitors. (you can find that below in our graph)

Last year Canyon Lake Girls Track Team had Jessica Cunningham make it to State in the Pole Vault. Cunningham also finished in fifth place scoring two points for Canyon Lake and breaking the ice for hopefully more Hawk athletes.

Cunningham has taken her Pole Vault Event and is now jumping for Stephen F. Austin.

The boys have not had a chance to go to State since they are still waiting to qualify but now they are in the qualify for the Second Day mode.
