Canyon Lake could never get control of the line of scrimmage in loss to Navarro

Panthers at Hawk Field Thursday night, 32-13.

Navarro did one thing well, and that was run the ball.

The old adage of run the same play until the other team can stop it was alive and well at Hawk Stadium. The Panthers averaged over nine yards per carry while the Hawks tried to find the ball.

Oh yeah, the Panthers did something else very well and that was hiding the ball from the Hawk defense. By the time CL figured which running back was running, it was too late to stop the positive yardage.

“We came out flat,” Coach Chuck Wallen said. “We struggled with the blitz, which put us in a protection mode instead of attack mode.”

The game did have a couple of bright spots. Canyon Lake’s first drive went 55 yards and was capped off by a Dominic Theisz run from 23 yards out.

Theisz finished with 53 of the 55 yards on the drive. That was the last scoring drive until the fourth quarter as the Hawks fumbled away other opportunities while Navarro was running the clock by running the ball.

The loss was a first for a CLHS JV squad since the 2009 season a span of 18 games.

“They (Navarro) did not give us anything we could not handle,” Linebacker Daniel Reed contemplated. “We were flat and did not respond at all. We’ll be ready for our next game.”

Canyon Lake drove 70 yards to end the game. Lee Power (16 yards), Theisz (14 yards), Ricker (6 yards) , and Colin Baker (36 yards) all had a hand on the ball for the drive.

Baker finished with a six yard run as he sprinted to the wide side of the end zone.

The line of scrimmage was controlled by Navarro the rest of the contest giving Canyon Lake a dose of reality as they prepare for their next contest at Wimberley next Thursday.
