Coaches Corner: With Canyon Lake’s Matt Monzingo

“Weird feeling knowing your destiny is in other people’s hands,”

Head Coach Matt Monzingo started the weekly talk with sobering words.

Canyon Lake could either be in their last week of practice or with a little help, could be in for the second season that involves playoffs.

“This is a first in all my years as a coach,” Monzingo continued. “You can’t plan, you can’t scout…this is extremely frustrating.”

When asked how the practices are going for this week, Monzingo stated, “Practice is going good…Bandera has good skill at quarterback.”

This will be the third team in a row that revolves around the quarterback as far as passing and running the ball.

“You look at their schedule and they can scare you a lot,” Coach surmised.

Bandera’s record won’t scare you as the Bulldogs have scratched for just one win for the season.

“They make a lot of mistakes and they have done it all year,” Coach Monzingo warned. “It all revolves around their confidence, all mistakes are mental mistakes.”

What the Hawks have to be careful of is not allowing the Bulldogs to get out of their dog house.

“If they fix that (mistakes), then they can beat you,” Coach Monzingo said.

With the possibility of this game being the final game for the season, the ReSporter wanted to know how Coach might play the Seniors for their last game.

“I will play them if they worked hard in practice,” Monzingo zinged. “We would like to finish 8-2, we are not 8-2 yet.”

For those fans that might not know….this is the skinny on how Canyon Lake can qualify for the playoffs.

Win against Bandera. Then the Hawks will need either a win from Boerne over Wimberley. That would give a two way tie for CL and Navarro (if Navarro wins). CL gets the tie breaker over Navarro for that spot.
Win or loss against Bandera. Hawks can make the playoffs either way if Navarro gets beat by Fredericksburg. Head to head tie breaker over Navarro gets us in again.
Boerne loses and Navarro loses…Hawks in two way tie with Boerne, but still makes playoffs as third team.

Canyon Lake watches from the sideline if Boerne gets beat and Navarro wins. This three way tie came about on Boerne Wil Amick’s 57 yard run with less than a minute left in the game two weeks ago.
Hawks lose by two points on the tie breaker.
