Canyon Lake is Getting Close, Lose 47-39 to Marion

Canyon Lake Varsity Boys were beaten in the winners bracket of the Marion Tournament last Friday night and will play again on Saturday for Third Place.

The game was ‘The Bigs’ against a ‘Scrappy’ Hawk team, taking the Bulldogs to the end of their leash before made free throws gave Marion the separation and the win.

Canyon Lake started the second stanza with a four point deficit but within minutes had 10 unanswered points and a lead they held into the halftime locker room.

“They (Marion) were giving us the mid range game and we were going to either pull up or dish to the post,” Coach Maynard strategized. “We did a good job of adjusting.”

The Bulldogs had three players over 6’5” which kept the Hawks busy trying to improvise their shots so Marion would not throw a ‘block’ party.

“We did a real good job of defending their bigs,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard said. “That was a big, big, big, plus for us.”

Eight shots were blocked by the taller Bulldogs during the contest. CL was in the game even with a 28 percent shooting percentage from the field and one percentage point lower than that from the charity stripe.

Canyon Lake sank five out of 18 shots which would certainly changed the game in favor of the visitors with just a few shots finding the bottom of the net.

The CL defense continues to shine as they have held their opponents to a 41 point average so far in this young season.

Matt Magness led the Hawks in scoring with 14 points while Matt Noyola finished with eight.

Noyola was all over the court trying to disrupt the taller Bulldogs. “That type of effort is what we need,” Coach Maynard said with a smile.

Doug Hubnik finished with eight rebounds leading Canyon Lake in that category.

The Hawks won their first game over Jourdanton which put CL in the winners bracket. Play will continue on Saturday as they play for third place in the Marion tournament.
