Baseball: CLJV wallops a YellowJacket, 15-7

Canyon Lake JV dominates Llano in their last scrimmage before the season starts next week.

Catcher Bryce Dehlin showed that all Catchers aren't slow after hitting a triple.

Llano only had three pitchers for this scrimmage and that left Canyon Lake taking the field for an extra two frames just so Coach Brian Owens could get enough work from his six pitchers.

What Coach Owens saw was another dominating performance from several of his players on the mound as strikes and defense kept Llano without a run until their last at bat.

Look at these numbers from four Hawk pitchers:

name ip r er h bb so balls/strikes
 Headrick 2 0 0 0 0 3 9/18
 McCleary 2 0 0 3 1 3 11/23
 Volz 1 0 0 0 1 1 5/11
 Kissell 2 0 0 0 3 3 21/16

As the night progressed so did the wind and temperature as the last inning was a numbing affair.

Canyon Lake had a decent game from the field as three of their four errors happened in the seventh inning. The good news was how Llano was not able to score in this game as they left 9 players on base with the 3rd, 4th, and 6th inning leaving a runner stranded on third.

The fourth inning had four runs with just two hits. Bryce Dehlin had the exclamation point when he hit a triple driving in two runs and later scoring on a Jonathan McGuire single.

“I was just trying to get something going and help with the momentum,” Catcher Dehlin said. “We are a lot better than I have seen this early in the season.”

On what his thoughts on the last two scrimmages, Dehlin finished, “In our first game we got all of our jitters out of us and now we are just trying to get into midseason form as fast as we can.”

With a reduced pitching staff for Llano, Canyon Lake had their last two innings of offense leaving the field with just two outs.

Now the dress rehearsal is over and the future starts next week as 18 players suited up for this game giving Coach Owens as many options in a game than he has had the last three years of competition.

“Finally have a whole team,” a smiling Coach Owens gleamed. “But we still have to work on our focus and consistency in the batter’s box, fielding and pitching. We made them (Llano) look like they were not any better than they were.”

You can get the feeling that opposing Coaches have said that same statement as CL has left the diamond on many a night these past few years.

This was a good night to hear from a Hawk Coach, it will give you warm fuzzies as a blistery cold wind was howling through this cold night.
