Canyon Lake Boys came out of their locker room and quickly took a 9-0 lead and never looked back in beating Cuero, 65-29.

“That is the stuff that drives Coaches crazy,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said in response to watching the 3rd quarter. “I am proud of how they came out and got after it to start the game and we had a good finish.”

That certainly played out as CL played just as good in that 4th period making up for the sloppy start in the second half.

The Hawks had three players matching a game high of 14 points in the win.

Will Nance came off the bench for his 14 as he scored 10 of his points in the final quarter.

Rory Preiss spread his scoring with 7 points in each half and scored his second half points in the 4th quarter coupled with Nance’s 10 then you can deduce this 17 point tandem helped put a lid on the Gobblers.

Brandon Ward concentrated his points in the second quarter with 9 points which help lead to his final 14 points.

CL shot 51% from the floor with a respectable 31% from beyond the arc.

Those free throws will need to improve if the Hawks have aspirations of rising to the top. On this night, Canyon Lake, left 14 points at the charity stripe which will come back to haunt in future games if not corrected.

Another item that drove Coach Chapman crazy was how unfocused CL was coming out of their halftime locker room.

Being ahead, 39-8 going into the second half had a Gobbler team that outscored the Hawks by 10 points in that 3rd stanza.

“He (Coach Chapman) got upset but he warned us to not come out sloppy,” Ward said. “We weren’t focused to start the 2nd half.”

Big man Tyler Williams also voiced those same sentiment, “We started out great but fell in that 3rd quarter.”

Canyon Lake did rebound to finish with 21 points in the 4th quarter increasing the final 36 point victory.

This win has Canyon Lake in 3rd place in district with a big game this next Tuesday in Wimberley.

The Texans won an earlier match-up with the Hawks that went to the wire in the Marion Tournament.

“We will just have to play hard and go in knowing the Wimberley game will be rough,” Williams rebounded.

“We just got to practice hard and beat them in practice,” Ward strategized. “Most of the guys realize that I want to win and they will have my back.”

Canyon Lake’s consistency is starting to pay off as the team is showing signs of taking care of the ball committing only 12 against Cuero and scoring over 40 points in recent contests.

A consistent game and improving those dastardly free throws will go a long way in helping the Hawks in realizing an attainable goal and a strong finish in district play.
