Hawks Charged For Playing in Own Gym, Texans Win, 58-49

Canyon Lake had their moments in a loss to Wimberley but those moments were fleeting as CL fell short, 58-49.

“They were on the boards and being physical and that limited our chances,” Coach Brian Hooper said as he filled in for an ill Coach Chapman. “We did a good job of breaking their press and we did some good things.”

Hawk fans have heard it before, but the free throw line was their downfall as the Texans took advantage with sharpshooting while the misses would be rebounded by the team in red for another chance of scoring.

Which Wimberley did on 6 different occasions for more points. Add those missed opportunities up and it would more points than this 9 point loss.

Oh yeah, that same free throw line for CL turned into 40% shooting or another six point left on the hardwood.

Pretty simple game when boiled down to those essential plays needed for a win.

Senior Brandon Ward led Canyon Lake with 13 points while Rory Preiss impressed with 5 steals and Will Gray chipped in 5 assists.

Those 3 players have been averaging a little over 30 points per contest and that number fell short with 24 leaving the Hawks in need for more offensive help.

Canyon Lake dug a hole in that first half going down 10 points with 6:11 left in the second quarter.

CL finished with a 9-2 run getting to within a 3 point deficit going into halftime.

Having your top 3 scorers with 5 points at that time would have been a good sign as another half would have a chance of turning those tables.

Canyon Lake did take the lead, 27-25 on a Ward layup and then upped that lead to 30-27 when Gray found Ward for one of his two 3 pointers.

The game remained close as both teams had a tug of war with the lead. The Hawks last time being in the game was with 1:49 left in that 3rd quarter and Wimberley up, 39-38.

The Texans would seize control with a 12-2 run with 3:42 remains in this contest and running their lead to, 51-40.

Canyon Lake battled back but could never get closer than 8 points as each possession ended up being a free throw clinic by the visitors which brings us back to that main reason for this loss.

Wimberley taking advantage of those free throws might have CL officials checking out the money brought in for this game as free throws might not have been the only happening that was free on Friday night.

This night had the Hawk Nest full to the rafters and a great night of competition.

“We controlled our emotions tonight but we still have to do our job,” Coach Hooper said.

Canyon Lake now will face La Vernia this Tuesday and a win will solidify a playoff spot.
