Canyon Lake’s Girls Basketball future looks bright even after a 2 point loss to Lehman in a season opening contest at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night, 38-36.

Lehman outscored CL by 6 points in the last 4 minutes of play to pull the win on a shot with 2 seconds on the clock.

“We had good effort,” Head Basketball Coach Zach Burleson commented. “This was a good learning experience and after we look at the film we will find what we will need to work on.”

Canyon Lake did start this contest on the short end to start the game starting the game with a 11% shooting percentage in that first stanza. The good news was after a slow start the contest was still within range of pulling off a win.

“I thought we made some good plays and stepped up,” Coach Burleson continued. “We had girls getting a lot of playing time.”

That was a direct result of having just 7 students that suited up against this Lobo team.

The Hawks did make a move in the 2nd quarter as the shooting percentage increased and this had the CL reducing the deficit to 2 points going into halftime.

That momentum continued starting the 2nd half and Canyon Lake would take the lead and increased their lead to 4 points with less than 4 minutes remaining the game.

Reagan Heun led the Hawks with 13 points while Freshman Jessie Melendez finished with a double/double in her debut of high school basketball scoring 10 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.

Yes, the future is bright for Canyon Lake as there were two freshman on the varsity with Chelsea Tschoepe being another newbie scoring 2 points and 5 rebounds.

Canyon Lake’s future is having a loaded freshman squad that will be fun seeing as they start their climb to the top of the rim in the coming years.

“Things are going to get better and the future looks bright,” Coach Burleson finished.

Having reinforcements coming this Friday will be a key for the Hawks as they will welcome Johnson City for the evening with that first win in their sights.
