Canyon Lake was a no show during the second half as Liberty Hill took control of this game winning, 38-17 and advancing to the next round.

“We made too many mistakes and good teams will capitalize on that,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We had some missed tackles and when you get into the playoffs, every play is important.”

The first half had the Hawks leading in every statistical component, but when the curtain was raised to start the second stanza, CL was stuck in neutral. The Hawks were able to garner just 63 total yards during this period of the game as LH started hitting their stride gaining 212 rushing yards allowing the home team to run out the clock once their lead was established.

Canyon Lake finished their season having more passing yards in this contest as the Panthers would not allow any traction for the Hawk’s running backs.

“i’m proud of them and they did not stop competing as the Seniors helped put us on the map,” Coach Drum beat. “We competed in every game and every week.”

Coach Drum certainly has a point as this will be a good gauge for years to come as CL will be loaded with several good athletes these next few seasons.

CL scored on their first drive covering 62 yards when Tanner Faris scored on a 10 yard pass from Ben Fulton helping with a fast start. Faris was a recipient of two passes that accounted for 26 yards on that first drive.

An interception by Sophomore Trenton Lorett on Liberty Hill’s first drive put the Hawks in good position for another score having the ball on LH’s 42 yard line.

A Hawk trickery play was snuffed out by the Panthers when they camped under a thrown pass from Faris that evened out the turnover score with two plays and two interceptions by running offenses.

With another chance, Liberty Hill would strike quickly after a 39 yard pass play of their own in what was billed as a game with run happy school’s had turned to the opposite as this Panther drive consisted of 4 plays and half of those snaps being by the airways.

The Hawks would respond with their next drive covering 68 yards and this drive had two CL passes covering 48 yards by Brandon Courtney and Austin Brennan scoring on an 18 yard pass from Fulton.

That would be CL’s final touchdown on this evening as Liberty Hill took the air out of the ball as this game would get long in the tooth and a runaway Panther win.

Canyon Lake would score in the second half on a 29 yard field goal by Lorett and this drive was also helped by a healthy dose of an explosive 40 yard pass and run by Brennan helping the Hawks penetrate to the Hill’s 12 yard line.

This drive would stall that would allow a Lorett field goal and final points scored on a very impressive season.

Canyon Lake had several Seniors that raised their game while playing as this group of players was winless during their Freshman year but from that point forward raised the bar in winning District as the JV team and then helping these Hawk’s finish 2nd in District play.

Now the CL will hang up their cleats and will have their sights on next season as 16 starters will be returning as the Sub-Varsity clubs start their climb to the next level.

Thanks Seniors and Go Hawks!!
