CL Hawks Break Dam on Pleasanton with 24 point 1st Quarter in Win, 59-47

Jake Ramirez continues strong play in win over Pleasanton

Canyon Lake’s Dam broke on Pleasanton Eagles as the Hawks rushed out to a 24-1 first quarter on their way to a 59-47 victory on Tuesday night.

The Hawks now sport a 8-5 record with one more game before the Christmas Break.

During the first part of this game, CL, methodically took a 6-0 lead before a time-out by Pleasanton.

After that break, Jacob Ramirez would make two 3 pointers in a row followed by Heath McDonough scoring two baskets on hustle plays and ballooning the lead, 16-1.

Canyon Lake was not finished as Ryner Martin and Parker Mott had consecutive 3 pointers and then a Heath McDonough 2 pointer off a rebound as time expired becoming the best quarter in the history of Hawk basketball, 24-1 lead.

That advantage would increase to 26 points midway into the second quarter as Canyon Lake would have 8 players scoring in the first half.

Pleasanton started the game by pressing CL which on many nights would be a downfall with multiple turnovers and easy baskets for the opposition.

On this night, when the Eagles pulled the press off, Canyon Lake had a lethargic offensive game opening the door for a Pleasanton comeback as the Eagles won each of the next 3 quarters.

With a 23 point first quarter lead, the Hawks would have the luxury of working on other parts of their game as repetition is the name of the game as district season gets closer.

“We couldn’t handle their zone,” Sharpshooter Jacob Ramirez said thinking back how the Eagles got closer as the game continued. “We needed to slow it down and get better ball movement.”

After a tiring tournament, Canyon Lake was all business starting the game as players like Ramirez were able to get their legs back with good production to start that first stanza.

“I am almost there,” Ramirez said when responding on what percentage he is at being full speed after coming back from an injury to start this season. “I am not as tired and I am working on dishing the ball…..it is easier for me to drive and look for the open man after the defense comes out to guard my outside shot.”

Ramirez was true on that statement as this game had some good passing underneath which would help in getting other players with easy looks at the basket.

Rory Preiss continues to excel during this time of year as this Senior only needs 4 more points to become the all-time scorer passing Andrew Riali from that throne.

Another good all around game from Preiss as he also finished with 4 steals and 5 rebounds.

Heath McDonough was in good form with his energy coming off the bench allowed the Hawks to keep the pressure as McDonough ended with 9 rebounds and scored 6 points.

Getting those numbers is all that this young man needs per game in getting Canyon Lake ready for district time in a few weeks.

The Hawks will be on the road this Friday in Jourdanton where they will want to continue playing a consistent round ball going into the break.
