Somersits on Hawks in Marion Tournament Final

Somersits on Canyon Lake in Championship Game

Canyon Lake forged a good two game stint in Marion’s Tournament this week-end but meeting up with Somerset for the second time in one week did not produce any positive results in losing, 80-54 in the Championship contest.

The Hawks beat Gregory-Portland and Marion to reach the final game as CL can now attest that the Somerset Bulldogs are a good team with very few (if any) weaknesses.

On Friday, Canyon Lake started the tournament with Jacob Ramirez and Rory Preiss coming through scoring 13 and 18 points respectfully.

The Hawks were ahead for most of this game but did find themselves with a bigger fight than they wanted as G-P closed the gap during that last stanza. Canyon Lake would have an answer with each Gregory-Portland run for an eventual win.

In the second contest against Marion, CL had a heavy dose of Rory Preiss, as this Senior, would post the most points in a game in Hawk history with 32 points.

Preiss scored most of his points near the basket with a good game of slashing to the basket with a goal or a Marion foul putting Preiss on the line with more chances of scoring. The game would feature a double digit rebounding game to boot on this record night for Preiss.

“I had talked earlier with Coach about my play and it wasn’t up to par,” Preiss recounted. “So I went into practice and this game wanting to respond….I came and busted my butt to the level the coaches wanted me too and I fed off of the first game.”

Preiss averaged 18 points for the tournament finishing with 54 in the 3 games and had 18 points in that first outing with Gregory-Portland.

The Hawks welcomed Jacob Ramirez back to their line-up after being cleared from an injury and his scoring added another offensive weapon. Ramirez averaged 10 points for the tournament.

Heath McDonough was also instrumental in the 3 game tournament upping his game with rebounds and more.

“I came into this week wanting to focus on rebounding,” Heath McDonough said. “I had not been playing my best basketball and I know I am a better athlete.”

Another good sign was having the Hawks with a much better free throw percentage finishing with 65% sinking 43 for during the Tournament.

The Hawks finish with Somerset and the gam was not as sweet as the first two contests with another spanking for the second time during this past week as the Hawks can deduce that this team is just plain good and it is hard to get up with Somer-sitting on you.

Canyon Lake will be in Luling this Tuesday and then host the Canyon Lake Basketball Tournament with action starting this Friday.

The Hawks will tip-off the tourney at 9am against Wimberley at the Hawk Nest. CL will carry a 4-2 record into their Tuesday night game with the Eagles and with a win have some momentum coming during the  Hawk tournament.
