Hawks Outrun an Eagle in Win over Akins, 56-28

The CL game with Austin Akins was an offensive showcase as the Hawks and Eagles flew all over the field scoring 84 total points.

            CL soars high in Win

Canyon Lake’s running game was in sync as the Hawks averaged, 10.3 yards per play with another explosive night of fireworks.

“I am proud of the kids,” Head Coach Charlie Drum started. “We knew we would be able to move the ball and the (Lee) Stafford interception helped in getting us going.”

“This was a track meet and we are starting to get healthy,” Coach Drum said while commenting on all of the players that have missed games this year. “We had been in the fire and when we were down we were able to respond.”

Coach Drum was talking about how the Akins Eagles started off with two long drives to start this game as they jumped out to a, 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

There would be a couple of long plays by the visitors with a 71 yard run and an 81 yard pass reception that scored that would have CL on full throttle throughout the contest.

“We have to work on preventing those big plays,” Drum said as coaches always need to have parts of a game to work on for the next week.

But much like last week, when the Hawks got better as the game progressed and never throttled down until the game clock reached, 0:00 and a 56-28 win.

CL would produced 16 plays that covered 10 or more yards and Akins just could not keep up with that type of pace.

The Eagles did have some explosive plays too, but a Hawk defense that stopped 5 offensive drives and add an interception, would allow Canyon Lake to get enough separation making the game not as stressful for the fans and coaches.

Outscoring Akins, 35-14 in the second half was just what the team needs to accomplish as that part of their game had led to a couple of losses and that needed to be rectified.

The Hawk’s Tanner Faris would be activated in this game after being on the sideline with an injury since the Giddings game. That injury knocked Faris on his very first offensive play of that contest.

       Go Hawks

Akins took 14 plays to score the first touchdown of the game, but CL would only need 3 plays to retaliate, when Faris would jet sweep around the corner for a 60 yard race up the sideline.

The Eagles would strike again on their second drive moving 84 yards and taking the lead back when QB Cagle found a streaking Jeyson Martinez on a slant that covered 24 yards of real estate.

CL would match that drive scoring after a 65 yard 7 play drive. Tristan Chacon would get one of his four touchdowns going the last 2 yards for the score.

Chacon was an active player as he had his best rushing game finishing with 185 yards on the night.

“Just the atmosphere and getting Tanner (Faris) back,” Chacon said in response to how well the contest went for the running game. “The offensive line blocked their tails off and I can’t thank them enough for all they do and all the glory goes to them.”

Says Go HawksThe Hawks would have the ball two times in the first half, that would not score points. One drive was stopped by 40 yards of penalties and a halftime clock stopped their next time with the ball having less than a minute to work with.

Canyon Lake would possess  the ball first to start the 2nd half and the Hawks would take advantage of this opportunity, traveling 65 yards with a 34 yard run by Chacon and then a Faris 9 yarder to cap off the drive giving CL a, 28-14 advantage.

This game would rank #8 for yardage gained in a game with 498 rushing and passing.

The Eagles would respond with a 81 yard pass play that had QB Cagle running out of the pocket to avoid Hawk pressure. That allowed a broken play to score as Rogers would make Canyon Lake chase but not catch a very good player with a catch and run play.

Canyon Lake would score on their next 3 possessions to put the game away as Chacon would score on a 15 and 16 yard runs and then a 30 yard pass play to Faris for a comfortable, 49-21 lead.

Another explosive play by Akins, this time Rogers would cover 71 yards down the sideline, while just escaping the grasp of Chance Martelli on the 30 yard line for the score.

Canyon Lake would not be finished as their ‘Finish’ motto would have Chacon with an untouched 50 yard run up the middle that would take just 11 seconds for a Hawk answer and final score.

CL’s offensive line was magnificent in the win as Chacon had already mentioned in his earlier quote.

“It is just an overall thing in the fourth quarter,” Brayden Hight commented on how the Hawks can have opposing defensive lines grasping for air as the game gets long in the tooth. “We have so many misdirection plays and when you are tired it makes it harder.”

QB Ben Fulton continues to perfect the hidden ball magician act as a defense tries to find the Hawk with the ball.

Canyon Lake had two rushers that topped the 100 yard rushing plateau as Chacon and Faris would finish with 321 combined yards.

This game had Micah St. John with a pedestrian 53 yards but watching how the Akins defense bunched up their defense at the middle of the line would allow other plays not involving a fullback running.

Gordon says Way to Go Hawks!!

St. John had several critical blocks as the Slot-T has many weapons that can be used during a game based on what a defense will concentrate on stopping.

“We executed very well,” Offensive Coordinator Troy Moses surmised. “They took away our trap and power running game but we responded in other ways.”

That the Hawks did,  and now District 14-4A will start with several more weeks of battles.

“Hopefully we can keep it up as we have some big games coming up,” Coach Moses closed.

The Hawks will be home next week as another Austin team will help open District 14-4A Division I when Memorial comes to the Hawk Nest.

Come early and be loud as CL will now commence their ‘Finish’ mantra as the games get serious as this will be a tough district to conquer and finish.

Go Hawks!!
