Hawks Lose on Last Second Shot to La Vernia, 67-64

The Hawks started their Basketball Season on a Saturday morning when La Vernia paid a visit to The Lake and winning on a 3-pointer with no time on the clock, 67-64.

Ben Rowe contributes in other facets in close loss to La Vernia, 67-64

This was a game that was back and forth but had CL in the lead after each quarter but the most important final stanza where the Bears outscored your Hawks by 9 points and three point win.

“We have to learn how to play with out fouling,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman assessed. “I was proud of the team….we played hard and aggressive and now we just need to play smarter.”

Canyon Lake was led by three players with double digit points with Parker Mott (17). Rico Griffin (11), and Anthony Zavala doing one better with a double double 13 points/rebound contest and Griffin cleaning the board with 10 bounds.

Zavala finished with 2 blocks that had a very impressive line score finishing with 2 blocks and 2 steals that would add his resume.

The up-tempo Hawks had 72 shots on goal which would rank right with the highest mark in the history of the School. Last year, CL, averaged 49 shots per game for a 23 attempt increase to start this season.

Not being shy would be a description of this team’s taking control of the offensive boards with 25 for the game.

Another good sign was how well Canyon Lake shared the ball in dishing out 19 assists with Sam Schimank leading this stat with 8 while Zack Taliaferro had a respectable 5 in helping a total team effort.

A three point loss can give a casual fan many stats to point a finger at, but hitting 30 turnovers and not reaching the 50% free throw shooting percentage would be a start.

                       Go Hawks!!

The Lake started that last quarter leading, 52-46 and La Vernia opened the quarter with 7 unanswered points and a lead. Griffin’s two made free throws had CL back with a 1 point advantage, 54-53 with 5:37 left in the game.

After a Bear free throw tying the score at 56 all, had both combatants taking a break for the next 2 minutes. Another run, this time with 6 points and 4 of those from the free throw line had CL needing another comeback with 2 minutes remaining.

Griffin was first with 2 free throws cutting the lead to a doable 4 points with 1:38 to go and La Vernia was successful with one charity stripe point and a tenuous, 63-58 lead.

Zavala would follow up with a lay-up and a one possession game the both teams traded a free throw and then Jeremy Duncan would be set up for a 3 pointer that was nothing but the bottom of the net tying the the game with 20 seconds remaining.

                    Go Hawks!!

That 3 pointer was set up when Ben Rowe kept the Hawks hope alive with two offensive rebounds and then a kick out to Schimank who found Duncan open for the game tier.

That 20 seconds would last 10 minutes with time-outs and a chess match both teams would be active when Rowe stole the inbound pass only to see the Bears claw that ball back into their hands for a winning shot as time ran out.

“I knew I wasn’t helping the offense and I decided that I was not going to let them get the ball in,” Rowe said without hesitation. “We will just push harder in practice and make shots next time.”

Rowe commented when asked what the Hawks would do in order to change the outcome to a positive result.

Canyon Lake will be back when they meet up with Blanco on Tuesday at the Hawk Nest and a chance to even their record.

Go Hawks!!
