Canyon Lake went down to the wire in game with Wimberley after an eventual loss to the Texans in overtime, 66-56.

“Very proud on how we competed,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We played hard in this back and forth game…it hurts to lose but we competed and gave it our best shot…that is part of life.”

Coach Chapman finished, “We made it tough on them with our defense and Pauly played big but we just came up short.”

With 5 seconds remaining, Guard Tyler Pauly went to the rim sinking the tying goal that sent this game to overtime, 50-50. After that shot, Wimberley still had time for ending the game in regulation but Senior Ben Rowe had other ideas after a steal at mid-court and a heave to end the game for the good guys just went long.

Pauly could be mentioned as one of CL’s best 3-Sport athletes before he is done at The Lake. After missing the first game of the season because he was in the Hawk’s defensive backfield. This young man will be getting his glove in getting ready to compete on CL’s Varsity Baseball team.

“I tried to keep the same game plan knowing that someone else would have to make shots,” Pauly said when reacting on how the team reacted to Griffin’s injury.

The Hawks would enter this extra period at a disadvantage after Rico Griffin left the game with an injury in the fourth quarter. Griffin was the only Hawk in double digit scoring (20) which would transfer the onus to another player.

CL would find it hard to match the Texans as they started with a 3 pointer and two free throws for a quick 5 point lead, 55-50.

The game was tight throughout with neither team having more than a 4 point advantage to start any of the quarters.

Pauly was instrumental in dishing out 6 assists which places this Junior in 2nd place in assists for a season.

“The last time we played Bandera was not good but we will be ready to go this time,” Pauly admonished.

Wimberley had forged a 6 point lead with 5:45 remaining in regulation before CL was able to get that deficit back down to a one possession one point game. (41-42 with 5 minutes and 44-45 with 4:08 remaining).

North Shore UMC says Go Hawks!

The Hawks were down 3 points with a little over one minute left after a Texan Free Throw, 46-49.

Keeping the contest to a one possession would be a need for having a chance in stealing a win.

Griffin would score his last two points from the charity stripe, 48-49 before the injury and still 47 seconds left.

Wimberley by this time in the game had pitched a tent at their free throw line and would be able to get their lead back for a 2 point advantage with 23 seconds showing on the clock.

That was when Pauly would be good from his penetrating drive to send this game for an extra 5 more minutes, 50-50.

Now, The Lake, will be matched up against Bandera at Boerne Champion on Friday with a tip-off at 7:00pm. The winner will have a chance to suit up again for a Bi-District game against Liberty Hill. The Hawks, with a win over the Bulldogs, will have their 4th straight play-off after not qualifying on their first 8 campaigns.
