Canyon Lake improved to 2-0 after another pitching gem from Tyler Pauly to start the Marion Tournament against SA Harlan, 2-1.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!

“We’ll take it,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said with a smile. “We emphasize this type of game every practice…this is our goal. Hitting the ball hard hit a flair or whatever happens, we will live with it.”

This game had moved into a pitchers dual early as each team’s pitcher would be neck and neck on the number of pitches that were thrown.

The Lake took advantage with more batters reaching base as this became a contest that would eventually be won by manufacturing runs.

That was the motif for CL for the past two years and it would materialize on both Hawk runs.

During the bottom of the 5th inning Matt Anderson would be the first Hawk batter to reach base with no outs. Matt Anderson had worked the Harlan pitcher to a full count and reached base after being hit by the pitch.

“He (Matt Anderson) has the best eyes on our team he is amazing,” Coach Escamilla said. “He can hit the ball too and if we had a player on 2nd base Anderson would be able to hit it.”

Go Hawks & Get Some Hit’s Man!

Ethan Slater would be inserted as a courtesy runner and Cale Claycomb sacrifice after a passed ball moved Slater to second base. The sac advanced Slater to third with a great jump on the pitch while Claycomb would reach base on a fielders choice.

With two Hawks on base James LaLonde single plated CL’s run for a lead, 1-0.

Pauly was grooming on the mound up unto an uneasy 7th inning. That started with a single which was followed by another infield single that had two Harlan players on base and no outs.

“He (Pauly) is not overpowering and he can get a first pitch strike with one of his pitches…we are early in the season and he will pick up his velocity,” Coach Escamilla responded to Pauly’s first two outings. “I bet he is the only player in Texas that already has two wins.”

A wild pitch would plate the tying run and moved that trail base runner to scoring position to 2nd base. There was still no outs and then Pauly would get back into his groove with a first-out pop up to Short-Shop Williams.

         Go Hawks!!

A Harlan delayed steal would was not successful which would clear the bases and Pauly would get a strike out to end the inning.

With Matt Anderson starting off the bottom of the 7th would be just what the doctored ordered with another walk, his 40th all-time as a Hawk. Courtesy runner Hunter Anderson would be called on after another sacrifice by Claycomb and an error on the Harlan’s catcher had CL with occupying 3rd and 2nd base.

With the infield in, Canyon Lake would have two quick infield outs left the Hawks with one last chance as Robinson came to bat.

On the 2nd pitch, a hard grounder to the 3rd baseman who threw the ball over their first baseman and a win when Hunter Anderson scored.

Canyon Lake will be back in action against Marion with a chance to continue their winning ways….who knows how that might happen!!

Way to Go Hawks!!
