Canyon Lake Basketball update for the Boy and Girls teams from this past Tuesday did not end well for The Lake with all 4 teams taking a loss.

                  Go Hawks!!

The Lady Hawks started District 28-4A play with losses to Wimberley while the Boy’s ended up on the short end of the box score against San Antonio Christian.

CL’s Lady Hawks did not have enough fire power in facing the Texans with Shelby Murphy leading the scoring with 8 points with three other players in the scoring column for this young squad.

Kaitlyn Cox (3), Katy Taliaferro (2), and Maddie Pipkin (2) being the only other Hawks with points.

Canyon Lake will be have another hill to climb on Friday when Fredericksburg comes calling with tip-off at 5pm for the JV and the Varsity Ladies to follow.

CL Boys had a hard time climbing the hill too with both losses coming by double digits. The Varsity and Junior Varsity had some players injured and under the weather in those losses as they will both try to have a comeback on the road on Friday in Blanco.

“We made some good strides in our last two games but in missing two guys we just could not find the guys to step up and help get the job done,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We had to put Peyton (McMullen) at the 5 to protect the rim and that paid off in getting his blocks.”

That move had McMullen tying Tyler Williams with 7 blocks in this outing for the most blocks in a game.

“He got me and he had a good block on me,” McMullen said when asked bout his block on one of the bigs for the Lions. “But that made me mad and I had to get him back.”

Those two plays happened in rapid time with McMullen’s revenge block coming immediately on the other side of the paint.

On what McMullen is looking for when playing to reject an opponent’s shot? “I look at the hips and when I see them sink I know he is about to go up for a shot and then it is all about timing.”

Canyon Lake’s Varsity was able to stay even with SAC during the second half but that 18 point deficit left a scar that could not be covered up in this loss.

Tyler Pauly’s 12 points and 5 assists led the Hawks with Pearse McCullagh reaching double digit scoring for the first time this season after shooting 3 rainbow three pointers in the second half.

Mikey Carrizales scored all of his 9 points in the first half while the rest of the team struggled to get started.

An earlier loss to Blanco will allow CL a chance to return the favor when they travel to Blanco with the last game before District 28-4A starts next week.
