Walk Off Triple Tops Off Hawk’s Double-Header Win on Thursday

Hawks still excited after a walk-off win over East Central Hornets, 3-2.

Canyon Lake scored a win over San Antonio East Central with a walk-off 3-run triple by Jeremy Greene to end the day after taking care of San Antonio Holmes in an earlier contest, 9-0.

Greene(r) pastures for sure on this day after Greene contributed a 2-run homer in that opening game. That had 5 rbi’s for a good day’s work.

            Let’s Go Hawks!!

“They are a good team,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said when commenting on the nightcap come from behind victory. “I told the team before we played that this team had tied Boerne and that we were playing Boerne now. Things are getting closer for us but we need to get better when we have a scoring opportunity.”

Coach Escamilla continued, “We used a lot of kids today and we are getting better with each practice and so my leash is longer in non-district ball games.”

Those comments, from Coach, came after being asked on how he made his decisions on pinch hitters in that win over East Central.

In that first game with SA Holmes, Hunter Anderson had the honors with a start and win after spreading 6 hits before giving away to reliever Peyton McMullen.

CL had 10 hits with half of those going for extra bases. Tyler Pauly led the team with 2 doubles and was joined by James LaLonde in leading the team with 2 hits.

Tanner Schultz continues to show a hot bat with 3 rbi’s with two off his double and another run scored on a sacrifice fly, which was his 3rd sacrifice fly for this season.

A big hit off the bat of Greene for a home-run which was the first of the year for the Hawks and first all-time for Greene.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!

The Hawks had a tougher go at it in the second game as this Hornet’s team was able to break a scoreless tie in the 4th inning when they scored their run with two outs with 3 straight singles followed by a hit batter.

Tyler Pauly worked out of the inning with a strikeout in keeping the damage to only a one run deficit.

Meanwhile, the Hawks were drawing blanks on the scoreboard and being held hitless through the first 6 innings.

Senior Pitcher for the Hornets was Nathan Galan and he spaced out 6 walks instead of hits in crafting his no-hitter as this game matured.

Then in the 7th frame, ECSA would be able to get an insurance run policy after getting their second man across the plate on a fielder’s choice and what looked like a much more comfortable lead.

    Go Hawks!!

With the Hawks having one last chance the team finally were awakened with a lead off base on balls for Gunnar Walker and that would retire Galan from the pitching mound and helped give CL a glimmer of hope.

Cody Jones and Hunter Anderson were both hit by pitches next which loaded the bases with still no outs in this final inning.

Greene had just one hit for the season before this double-header day with a homer in that first win over SA Holmes and Canyon Lake would now have just one hit in this win.

With an even pitch count at two balls and two strikes, Greene was able to get CL’s first hit and walk off with a triple when the ball fell in front of a diving left fielder which had the ball heading for the outfield fence, while the bases were being emptied for a dramatic Hawk comeback, 3-2.

On Greene’s thoughts on that last at bat, “I thought Coach was going to give me a squeeze signal, but I was just wanting to put the ball in the gap or just but a bat on the ball and not strike-out.”

“I saw the ball get past the left fielder and then saw Coach Lancaster jumping up and down and then I just started thinking triple but did not know it was a walk-off because I must have had too much adrenaline going….and then I saw the horde (teammates) coming at me.”

Jeremy Greene taking it all in after memorable day on the diamond.

On the earlier home-run? “We keep count in practice on how many times we have hit the ball over the fence and I had done that 3 times…but I had a hitter’s pitch (2-1 count) and so I was just trying to pull one.”

Greene continued (still had some more adrenaline to work off), “I would not designate me as a clutch hitter yet but hopefully I have found my swing and now I can just put more out there.”

Pitcher Peyton McMullen got the win after Pauly succumbed to a pitch count in that last inning was quick to the point, “Coach called and I was just trying to stay focused and throw strikes and give my team a chance to win.”

On the Greene hit? “I just started jumping up and down and was very excited….this builds confidence as they were a good team and we just need to play pitch by pitch and do what we need to do.”

Truly an exciting game as an 11-3 Hawk team will take the field agains on Friday with a 5:30 first pitch against San Antonio Johnson.

This will be CL’s ninth San Antonio school they have faced during this non-district slate and another win will go a long way in preparing this Hawk team to a district schedule in two weeks.

Way to Go Hawks!!
